Reiki PrinciplesTHE Reiki Principles (a.k.a. Reiki Precepts or Reiki Concepts) were the very heart of Mikao Usui's "method for achieving personal perfection" ... as they are the heart of modern-day Reiki. I had been "doing Reiki" for 8 years before I began to realize this -- after receiving my 3rd-level Reiki initiation. In the years since then (1999) I have come to appreciate the Reiki Principles more and more. Most of us, when we first encounter Reiki, are so taken by the energetic connection to Source ... that nothing else gets our attention. When we are "doing Reiki" (which is really an act of not-doing) we are in a state of meditation, a state of divine peace and grace. It is this peacefulness and surrender that connects us to Shinki ("God energy" or Source-energy), which is what transforms and heals us. BUT ... how much time do we spend, every day, "doing Reiki"? And how much time do we spend caught in the whirlwind of mass-consciousness, the hurrying-worrying-frustrating realm of personalities and their concerns? We are so easily pulled into the whirlwind! Everywhere around us are messages and images of fear, anger, worry, disease, catastrophe! What Mikao Usui apparently knew, and what many of us are just now learning, is that our habitual, day-after-day vibration is what creates our reality! The degree of fear, anger, worry, disease, and catastrophe in our life corresponds with the degree to which we are immersed in thoughts of those things. Our thoughts become beliefs, and beliefs become reality.* * For more on exactly how we create reality, I recommend the book Ask And It Is Given (Abraham-Hicks).
So ... Usui-sama suggested that we learn to embody (at every moment!) the following "Reiki Principles" ---

The point is, if we are perpetually free of anger and worry, in a state of appreciation and kindness, we are in a state of Reiki all the time. This kind of thing is standard procedure on any path to Self-realization (which is what Usui's method was all about): The aspirant begins by creating a personal oasis of divine peace and connection amid the chaos of mass-consciousness ... and eventually learns to carry that peace into the surrounding chaos, making a bigger and bigger oasis in the outside world.... Usui called these Reiki Principles "The Secret Method Of Inviting Blessings" and "The Spiritual Medicine of Many Illnesses." The paper on which he wrote them (in 1921) was the only place we know of his using the phrase Usui Reiki Ryoho. This is usually translated as "Usui Reiki Healing Method" -- but, according to Dr. Hayashi's student Mr. Tatsumi, what Usui meant by it was "Usui system for connecting with your ancestral self." Translations of the Reiki Principles have almost always included the instruction that we should sit and chant the Principles, morning and night, in order to incorporate them into our being. But, a more accurate translation, according to Dave King, is that we should live every moment of life -- from morning to night -- through the Reiki Principles! » Great thanks to Dave King and his partner the late Melissa Riggall (a.k.a. Shen Lissa), for these enlightening translations. For additional details, see www.threshold.ca/reiki/Usui-Gainen.html.
